When it opened its doors in 1966, Tom Growney Equipment
consisted of half a dozen employees working out of a trailer
and one small building. Because of a commitment to excellence
and a solid work ethic, the business employs one hundred
people and serves all of New Mexico and West Texas from four
full service locations in Albuquerque, Farmington, Hobbs
and El Paso. "Quality, Integrity, Reliability. That's
been our motto since Day One," says Thomas F. Growney,
the company's founder. "If we can't do it first class;
we don't do it," Growney adds with the conviction that
built the impressive reputation the company now enjoys.
In the beginning, the company represented a handful of models
of construction equipment manufactured by Deere and Company.
At the time Deere had little in the way of machine population
or name recognition in the New Mexico construction industry,
and Growney is particularly proud of the fact that it now enjoys
a strong market share. The line, which has grown to include
some 50 models, still forms the core of the company's activity.
Further expansion began in 1980 when the company started selling
Melroe Bobcat machines and Sakai compaction equipment. More
recently, it has added Dynapac compaction equipment and Broce Broom sweepers.
"We sold tractors to customers 28 or 29 years ago; and
we are still providing support services for those same machines," Growney
says. The parts and service departments are major reasons for
the success of Tom Growney Equipment. Even in the era of expanded
product lines, the award-winning parts department nearly always
has the parts available when customers ask for them. The often
quoted company philosophy is that the sales department sells
the first machine to a customer, but the parts and service
departments will sell the second or third machine to that customer.
Keeping a large inventory of parts and machinery to quickly
meet customers' needs is an expensive proposition, yet investing
in those things gets results. All of the people at Tom Growney
Equipment are aware that their prices are not always the lowest
in the marketplace; and that their customers are therefore
entitled to the best possible treatment.Trying to meet the
needs of even those potential customers who can't afford to
buy an expensive piece of machinery has led Growney to include
equipment rentals in the business.
Every employee is important to the success of the company,
both by the skill with which he does his job and by the professional
attitude he projects to the customer. Despite its involvement
in a cyclical industry, the company has never had to lay off
employees. In fact several employees have been with the company
20 years or longer.
